Check McHenry ICE Custody

To find someone after a McHenry County transfer to ICE custody, begin with the federal immigration system rather than the county release report. ICE detention is civil immigration custody, and movement from the county jail to ICE is not a community release. The Online Detainee Locator is designed mainly for current custody, with limited visibility for recent ICE releases. A negative search remains inconclusive. Identity details, spelling, age limits, data timing, and a later transfer can all affect the result, so unresolved McHenry County ICE custody checks require direct agency follow-up.

McHenry ICE Custody Route

ICE’s Online Detainee Locator System, or ODLS, is the official starting point for a person believed to be in current immigration detention. It can also retain a limited recent-release result. Research supplied for this project describes coverage of people released from ICE custody within 60 days, but ODLS is not a permanent immigration release archive. A result should be read as a statement from ICE’s system at the time of access.

The custody sequence matters. A McHenry County court release may end local criminal detention while an immigration detainer causes a handoff to ICE. In that sequence, the Sheriff’s custody ends, but the person does not return to the community. ODLS then becomes the relevant public locator. If ICE later releases or transfers the person, only the agency record can settle the event once the limited online window passes.

Search McHenry ICE Records

The preferred ODLS search uses the nine-digit Alien Registration Number, usually called an A-number, plus country of birth. A biographical search uses exact name and country of birth, with date of birth when available. Hyphens, spacing, alternate spellings, and name order can affect matching. Searches for people under 18 are unavailable. Never force a loose result to fit a person merely because the surname matches.

  1. Open ODLS and choose A-number or biographical search.
  2. Enter the nine-digit A-number and country of birth when known.
  3. Otherwise use the exact name, country of birth, and optional date of birth.
  4. Compare all displayed identity and detention details.
  5. Record the access time and follow up when the result is absent or unclear.

ODLS confirms the result it displays, not the entire path before or after it. A detention location can change. A recent-release entry can age out. Data may lag a physical movement. For a broader named-person decision path, the McHenry County released-inmate search separates county, state, BOP, ICE, and court sources without treating one system as universal.

McHenry ICE No-Result Limits

“Not found” does not prove community release. The A-number may be wrong, a name may be entered differently, the person may be outside the searchable age range, a transfer may not yet be reflected, or the public visibility period may have ended. The person could also be under another authority. A sound conclusion states only that ODLS did not return a matching current result at that time.

Important: An absent ODLS result is not an ICE release certificate. Confirm unresolved custody directly with ICE.

The Detention Reporting and Information Line, or DRIL, is 888-351-4024. Research records its hours as weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern, excluding holidays. Enforcement and Removal Operations, known as ERO, is the next contact for an unresolved case. Have the full name, A-number, country of birth, date of birth, last known detention site, and approximate transfer date ready. Ask for existing custody information rather than guessing at the meaning of a failed web search.

McHenry PDF Excludes ICE Detainees

The McHenry County Sheriff’s public name and date PDFs cover adults with local McHenry County charges. They expressly exclude federal detainees. That boundary prevents the three-day local release report from proving an ICE release. A person can vanish from local criminal custody because ICE accepted the transfer, yet remain detained under federal civil authority.

If someone is believed to be physically housed at the McHenry County jail under federal authority, the Sheriff’s Corrections Information page directs callers to a correctional officer at 815-338-9396. That call checks present local housing. ODLS addresses ICE custody. The two inquiries answer different questions and may both be needed during a handoff.

Detainer
A request or legal mechanism that can lead to continued custody or transfer after local custody ends.
ICE transfer
A handoff into immigration custody, not return to the community.
ODLS
ICE’s public locator for current detention and limited recent-release visibility.
ERO
The ICE component responsible for detention and removal operations.

McHenry ICE Contract Ended

McHenry County’s federal immigration role is historical. The jail’s third floor was built for ICE use and opened in 2005, while the facility expansion was completed in 2006. County sources state that new ICE admissions ended after December 31, 2021, and federal detainees were gone by March 2022. The county’s announcement made the key custody point plain: ending the agreement caused detainees to be transferred elsewhere, not freed.

That history explains why older records and memories may place an ICE detainee in Woodstock even though no current ICE detention institution was identified in McHenry County. Search present detention through ODLS and ERO. For an older local placement, seek the custodian’s existing records and identify the date carefully. The county contract update and its follow-up establish the transition rather than a present detention service.

McHenry ICE Notification Limits

ICE’s Victim Notification Program is a separate eligibility-based notification channel. It is not a public database of every ICE release and should not be used as a substitute for ODLS, ERO contact, or an agency record. Notification and historical proof serve different purposes. A notice may prompt a same-day verification call, while the underlying ICE custody record remains the source for the event.

Illinois VINE also should not be assumed to follow a person seamlessly from McHenry County custody into ICE. Registering on a county record tracks that source. Immigration custody and ICE notification use separate systems. When the suspected custodian changes, verify the person again in the system that now owns the custody event.

Document McHenry ICE Custody Changes

A current ODLS screen can help locate a detainee, but it is not designed as a lasting archive. Preserve the exact result and then seek the record from the agency that made the custody change. Useful identifiers include the full name, A-number, country of birth, date of birth, last known detention facility, and approximate date of the McHenry County handoff. These facts reduce confusion caused by alternate spellings or similar names.

Ask for an existing custody, transfer, or release record rather than asking ICE to create a narrative. The useful fields are the recorded event date, event type, originating location, receiving office or facility, and release or transfer authority when maintained and releasable. If the local exit also matters, obtain the McHenry County record separately. The county can document when its custody ended, while ICE controls what happened after an immigration transfer.

A federal immigration court order may help explain the legal case, but it should not be treated as proof of the exact time of physical release. Agency movement and court action can occur at different times. Keep the order, ODLS result, call details, and agency response as separate records. This preserves the line between release from one custodian and entry into another.

McHenry ICE Source Freshness

ODLS is dynamic and its negative results are time-sensitive. Preserve the access date, search method, exact spelling, A-number used, and displayed status. Recheck after a recent transfer because data can lag. If web and agency information conflict, rely on ICE for its custody event, the Sheriff for the county exit, and the court for its order. A court release order does not by itself prove the person physically entered the community.

Note: The county’s historical ICE role must not be described as a current detention contract or current McHenry County ICE facility.
